February 9 - English Parliament declares the colony of Massachusetts to be in a state of rebellion.
March 10 - The Transylvania Company sends Daniel Boone out to cut the Wilderness Road in Kentucky.
March 23 - Patrick Henry proclaims: "Give me liberty or give me death."
April 19 - The American Revolutionary War begins in Concord, Massachusetts.
May 10 - The Second Continental Congress meets.
June 15 - The Second Continental Congress votes unanimously to appoint George Washington head of the Continental Army.
June 17 - The American colonies are victorious over the British at the Battle of Bunker Hill.
July 3 - George Washington assumes formal command of the Continental Army.
July 26 - The U.S. Post Office is established, with Benjamin Franklin as Post Master General.
August 1 - Thomas Paine publishes an article supporting women's rights in the Pennsylvania Gazette.
August 23 - King George III issues a proclamation declaring the American colonies to be in a
state of open rebellion.
November 28 - The Second Continental Congress formally establishes the American Navy.
December 22 - Esek Hopkins is named first Commodore of the Continental Navy.
December 31 - American forces led by Benedict Arnold lose the Battle of Quebec to the British.
